PROP BATTLE

MOBILE APPLICATION


Our organization, Prop Battle, is developing a mobile app that allows friends to place bets in a manner unlike any other platform. Unlike traditional platforms where users bet against the house, Prop Battle fosters a social and competitive atmosphere by allowing users to create and place prop bets against their friends on a variety of topics, including sports and pop culture events.

BACKGROUND
Over the course of three weeks, I collaborated on a UX group project to develop Prop Battle, a mobile sports betting application. The sports betting culture has increasingly lost its social touch, and big corporations, such as casinos and major sports betting apps, dominate the market.
ROLE
Knowing that we had three very talented prototypers in our group, I stepped outside of my comfort zone and took on the UX researcher role for this project. In addition to research, I assisted with early sketching and ideation, branding, and presentation materials.



PROBLEM
Traditional betting apps often leverage their house position to the detriment of their users, making the experience feel impersonal and machine-like. Betting should be engaging and social, not a battle against an algorithm. An app that allows users to make prop bets against friends instead of the house can address these issues, enhancing the overall user experience by emphasizing the social aspect of betting.



GOAL

Prop Battle aims to foster a community-driven experience through peer-to-peer payments, ensuring that winnings stay within the community rather than going to large corporations. This innovative approach not only revives the social aspect of betting but also empowers users by keeping the stakes personal and engaging.

POPULAR CULTURE
BETTING - SIDELINED

Based on our interviews and surveys, we found that there wasn't sufficient interest in betting on events like the Grammys or Golden Globes. Therefore, we decided to set this idea aside for a future iteration.

    USABILITY TESTING

    Users had difficulty viewing their friends' bets. To address this, we redesigned the page to resemble a traditional social media platform by adding profiles, timestamps, and updating the homepage header.

    The purpose of this splash page is to inform the user, on a base level, what our application is and how we are different from other online betting services. To code this page, I used HTML and CSS within Visual Studio and I shared the project with my team members using Github.

    FUTURE ITERATIONS








    PROP BATTLE LINE ADJUSTMENTS
    User research revealed that one of the main frustrations was the inability to adjust betting lines on games. By adding this feature, we aimed to enhance the betting experience for Logan and our entire user base.











    POPULAR CULTURE BETTING

    Introducing popular culture betting, such as predicting the winner of Album of the Year at the Grammys or the box office success of the next Marvel movie, presented an intriguing angle.

    However, one of our primary goals is to find a way to make it legal nationwide, ensuring the best interests of our shareholders.




    REFLECTIONOf all the case studies I've done, this one taught me the most. Every member of our group was an A+ student, each bringing incredible talent to the table. Initially, I aimed to focus on prototyping, but we had three other highly skilled prototypers in the group. Given my strong communication skills and the availability of proficient prototypers, we decided I could best support the group as a UX researcher. This role taught me a great deal about user research and what goes into a successful research phase. Additionally, I had the opportunity to observe the design processes of my exceptionally talented teammates. Hats off to the team!
